Old News
is a history magazine disguised as a modern day newspaper published by
Susquehanna Times & Magazine, Inc. Printed in the style of The New York Times
or the Times Herald, Old News features articles about historic events. The free
sample copy advertising the magazine offers articles about the Donner Party, the
Wright Brothers, Ulysses S. Grant, Florence Nightingale, Casey Jones’ tragic
death, Henry II’s exercise program and more.
The articles found in Old News are well-researched and informative, often containing information that is not readily known. Each article is written in a style that peaks the interest of the reader, keeping him/her absorbed and yearning for more. Wherever possible, photos and/or artwork are used to illustrate certain points in each article. Sources for each article featured in Old News are provided so that readers can further research topics they find especially intriguing.
Especially enjoyable in this issue are the tales of the Donner Party’s misfortunes and the story of Charlotte Corday. The mishaps that plagued the Donner Party were numerous, but little is really known about their journey besides the fact that many in the party resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Richard Sheppard, the author of the article, “Donner Party Menaced by Mountain Snow,” uses the words of one of the survivors of the Donner Party, then only thirteen years old, to weave a tale of disaster and despair.
The story of Charlotte Corday is also tragic. “Woman Stabs French Leader,” by Peter Huber, tells the tale of French patriot Charlotte Corday who would do anything for her country. During the French Revolution, Corday sided with the revolutionaries, wanting democracy for her people. However, when a callous and despicable man named Jean-Paul Marat begins a campaign designed to destroy all aristocracy by murdering all those held in captivity, Corday’s becomes disenchanted with the revolution. Displaying remarkable courage for a woman of her time, Corday sets out to assassinate Marat. What makes the tale so tragic is that even though Corday succeeded in her assassination attempt, she was unable to stop the reign of terror to follow in the murderous rampages of Danton and Robespierre.
There are just so many well-written stories from the past written in a fresh manner for the readers of today. Old News is printed nine times a year and is available for purchase via a $17.00 annual subscription fee. For any history buff, $17.00 is a small price to pay for such information regarding the history of the world.
