Anyone who knows me knows that I have a tremendous love for animals – cats in particular. Knowing how much I love my own little furry child, a co-worker of mine gave me a book he thought I would truly enjoy. On a night when I definitely needed a laugh or two, I sat down to read All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat by Suzy Becker.
All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat is filled with drawings coupled with words of wisdom. The drawings portray a cat’s idea of what that wisdom might mean to him. For example, “be a good listener” in cat terms is very literal – Binky, the author’s cat, can be very far away, but will always come running when a can of food is opened. “Test limits” is depicted as Binky destroying the author’s desk area. “Get to know people in high places” translates into Binky trying to become acquainted with the author’s pet bird. Some of the words of wisdom are written in cat terms. For these instances, an old saying such as “take time to smell the flowers” becomes “take time to eat the flowers.”
Placed together with the various words of wisdom, the artwork can’t help but elicit a chuckle from the reader, especially if the reader is a cat owner. The antics of Binky mirror those of my own cats, adding an extra chuckle to the works. I also loved the little extras the book has to offer such as the dedication page, artfully edited by Binky himself.
All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat is truly a funny book, but the humor may have less of an impact on a person who does not own a cat and therefore cannot relate fully to the humorous cat antics featured within. I can’t imagine one cat owner who wouldn’t love receiving this book as a gift. All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat by Suzy Becker offered just the laugh I needed that night and I’m thankful to my co-worker for presenting me with this book. Buy it for a cat owner who could use a chuckle or two today.
