The dramatic action adventure Playstation 3 video game BEYOND: Two Souls centers around Jodie Holmes (portrayed by Caroline Wolfson as a child and Ellen Page as an adult).  Jodie has a psychic connection with a ghost-like entity named Aiden which affords her certain telepathic abilities, such as possessing other people’s minds, manipulating objects and strangling her enemies.  Jodie’s stay at the Department of Paranormal Activity, under the care of Nathan Dawkins (Willem Dafoe) and Cole Freeman (Kadeem Hardison), where she learns how to control her abilities.

Unfortunately, upon becoming an adult, it would seem that the DPA is less and less interested in severing their bond with Jodie.  The CIA also is interested in recruiting her.  The more missions she goes on for them, the more danger she finds herself in and depending on the player’s decisions, Jodie can find herself in some very grave danger indeed.

The musical score of BEYOND: Two Souls was created by award-winning Scottish composer Lorne Balfe.  In addition to the musical scores he has created for such notable films as Ironclad, Salinger, The Sweeney and Not Another Happy Ending, Balfe has become a highly sought after game score composer.  His work on the Assassin's Creed: Revelations score earned him a BAFTA award for Best Original Music.  In addition to AC: Revelations, Balfe has composed the musical scores for Skylanders: Giants, Skylanders: Swap Force, Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed III: The Tyranny of King Washington.

The BEYOND: Two Souls Soundtrack begins with Jodie’s Suite, featuring a full orchestra supplemented by the tones of a female vocalist.  The main theme of the game’s score, Jodie’s Suite is majestic with a hint of melancholy and an undercurrent of grim determination.  Though there are moments during the soundtrack featuring a quiet eeriness like Aiden’s Theme…in keeping with his ghost-like presence, I would assume, there are other tracks of score featuring adrenaline-pumping percussion and fast-paced strings like in The Experiment

The BEYOND: Two Souls Soundtrack features a definite sense of action and adventure, with that eerie twist that offers the listener a glimpse into Jodie’s relationship with the ghost-like presence of Aiden and the powers this relationship bestows upon her.  The music is interesting and serves well as both a background score for a video game and a standalone album.  With BEYOND: Two Souls, Lorne Balfe once again proves his prowess in composing musical scores for video games.
