After reading the first episode of The Bloody Quarrel, sequel to the thrilling novel The Last Quarrel, I couldn't wait to see what would happen to Captain Fallon, his family and friends.  Fortunately, I wouldn't have to be tantalized by one episode at a time - I was offered the opportunity to review The Bloody Quarrel in its entirety.

At King Aidan's mercy, his wife lost to the Kottermanis, Fallon must follow the king's instructions or risk losing his son Kerrin and any hope of seeing Bridgit again.  The treachery of Aidan and what he has forced Fallon to do keeps him praying for vengeance, but first, he must swallow his pride and overcome his guilt so that he can carry out his king's orders - train an army that will stop the Kottermani from taking over Gaelland.  With the help of his friends, the weapons and men pouring in from all over the country and a newborn resolve to do all that he must to keep his family safe, Fallon sets out to train his raw recruits to become fearsome killers.

Meanwhile, across the ocean, Bridgit has become the leader of the enslaved Gaellish people.  She does everything she can to keep them from being killed or sold off as she plans for their escape.  But when the time to escape comes, can she keep her promise to get all of her people home alive or will the traitors among them scuttle her plans?

And when Fallon finds a sure-fire way to ensure the return of all the people that the Kottermani have stolen, his actions start a raging fire that burns deep within the Kottermani prince's heart and threatens to consume Fallon and all he holds dear.  And let's not forget the Zorva worshippers, who threaten the very existence of the people and have sworn that all shall follow or all shall die.  With enemies on all sides, how can Fallon hope to hold Gaelland?

I can describe this novel in one word - WOW!  Duncan Lay has created characters that you can't help but be intrigued by.  Folks like Fallon and his family and friends are people that you can relate to.  They are heroes, but not without flaws.  You get angry with them, but can't help but cheer them on, forgiving them for their faults and hoping they win over the evil that has entered into their lives.  The twists and turns in the novel will keep you guessing until the very end.  Just when you think you know who the good guys and the bad guys are, you realize that you never really had a clue.

To give you an idea of how captivating Duncan Lay's writing is, I will relate my own experience.  Last night, I still had quite a few pages to go before finishing the book and I had to get up early the next day.  Yet, I couldn't put the book down...not until I finished reading this chapter...which turned into after this battle...which turned into I need to see how this turns out.  Suffice it to say, I went to sleep late, not stopping to put The Bloody Quarrel down until I reached the cliffhanger ending - yes, he did it again: left us hanging until his next novel in the series.  And there were moments in there that had me shouting...oh, hell, no!  Of course, I should have expected them, but they shocked me just the same.

To sum things up, The Bloody Quarrel is the perfect sequel to The Last Quarrel, full of action and suspense, with twists and turns in every chapter that will keep you guessing to the last.  The writing is captivating and the storyline well thought out.  Duncan Lay gets you invested in the fates of his characters and I challenge you to put this book down once you've gotten through a couple of the chapters.  I can't wait to read the next novel in the series!
