By now, if you have visited this site enough, you would know that I am a huge fan of suspense/thriller author Jeffery Deaver.  His Lincoln Rhyme series of novels is my absolute favorite, but that hasn’t stopped me from reading his other works.  So, when I saw his novel, The Bodies Left Behind, on the bargain table for an obscene price at Barnes & Noble, I pounced on it.

When Brynn McKenzie, a deputy in the Kennesha County Sheriffs Department, responded to a routine 911 hang-up at a vacation home in Lake Mondac, little did she know that she was about to embark on the journey of her law enforcement career.  What was supposed to be routine was anything but - Brynn had stumbled upon a double homicide.  Worse yet, the killers were still in the house and they weren’t about to let something pesky like a Kennesha County Sheriffs Department Deputy stop them from escaping the crime scene.  Of course, they weren’t exactly inclined to let her leave the scene alive either.

As the two murderers close in, Brynn must use all the tricks she has ever learned from the state police on down to a school project she worked on with her son in her fight for survival.  And it doesn’t help that she is saddled down by a upper-class, high maintenance female survivor of the massacre on Lake View Drive either.  Can Brynn find a way to get to safety and alert her fellow law enforcement agents or will the two criminals add murder of a Deputy Sheriff to their résumés?

When I started reading this novel, I was prepared for suspense.  After all, Jeffery Deaver is one of the best suspense novelists out there.  However, with this novel, Deaver has quite outdone himself.  The cat and mouse game played between the criminals and Brynn McKenzie is a whole lot of fun.  You never know what to expect from the Deputy Sheriff or the men who are pursuing her.  Just when you think you know what one character will do, they take a completely opposite tactic.

Being the master of suspense, Deaver knows that he must throw several twists and turns in a novel to keep things on edge.  There were so many twists and turns in this novel it was like riding a huge rollercoaster.  In fact, at one point, my mouth dropped open and I just sat there staring at the page for a minute before finally blurting out, “No way!!”  That’s how shocking some of the plot twists can be in The Bodies Left Behind.

I had a whole lot of fun reading this novel, which lasted me only a couple of days thanks to the clever ways he draws you into the plot.  You are so intrigued by the characters and the storyline that you can’t put the book down - you just need to know what happens next.  And I love that recurring theme that keeps appearing in his novels - if you keep moving, they can’t hurt you.  Jeffery Deaver should consider consulting on a movie deal for The Bodies Left Behind.  It would make a spectacular suspense thriller that I would love to see on the big screen or even as a made-for-television movie.
