In 1980, a hit comedy directed by Harold Ramis and starring Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Michael O’Keefe and Bill Murray hit the theaters.  Caddyshack focuses on a young man who works as a caddy at an upscale country club golf course in an effort to earn enough money to go to college.  The members of this country club are eclectic at best and downright wacky at worst.  But most people will remember this film for the hysterical scenes featuring the assistant groundskeeper (Bill Murray) and his war with the country club’s resident gopher

The soundtrack of this film featured music from legendary artists such as Kenny Loggins and Journey.  The musical score was created by Johnny Mandel, an American composer known for his work on the soundtracks of MASH, Escape to Witch Mountain and Freak Friday.  The soundtrack of Caddyshack has been out of print for many years and has never been available in CD format.  Recently, La-La Land Records announced the release of the Caddyshack Limited Edition Soundtrack available in CD format on January 5, 2010.

The soundtrack features some great songs by Kenny Loggins, an ‘80s rock’n’roll legend who produced songs for many of the movies that hit the theaters in that decade.  Loggins has four songs on this CD: I’m Alright, Lead the Way, Make the Move and Mr. Night.  All four are terrific - Loggins displays musical diversity in each track - but I’m Alright is my favorite.  It’s quintessential Kenny Loggins, with great guitars, a catchy chorus and lyrics that perfectly represent the main character of the film.  The album also features Any Way You Want It by Journey, There She Goes by The Beat and Something on Your Mind by Hilly Michaels.

Johnny Mandel’s compositions for scenes featuring the gopher are perfect.  I can actually picture Bill Murray as he blows up parts of the golf course in an effort to destroy the gopher.  Although I enjoyed the jazzy tunes of Marina, my favorite musical score tracks were Divine Intervention and The Big Bang which featured such recognizable classical music as Ride of the Valkyries and the 1812 Overture (complete with explosions denoting Murray’s failed attempt to incinerate the gopher).

The booklet that comes with the limited edition soundtrack features information about the film, quotes from the characters and quotes from the various people who worked on the film.

The Caddyshack Limited Edition Soundtrack is a long-awaited treat for fans of the film.  This is a fun soundtrack with great songs and an incredibly enjoyable musical score.  But Caddyshack fans beware - there are only 3500 limited edition soundtracks to be had, so hurry up and get your copy today!
