Today, I had a splitting headache. They tell you not to review music when you have a headache, because you can’t really give an honest review. After all, who can pay adequate attention to an album when your head is pounding. However, in my opinion, if you get a hold of the right album, reviewing this music while suffering from head pain shouldn’t be all that hard. So, it was with mixed emotions that I chose to listen to Cinema Classics for Solo Piano.
I happen to be a sucker for a well-played piano and have heard Mark Northam perform on other albums before. I find Northam to be very talented and so, I was hardly surprised when I found myself thoroughly enjoying every minute of Cinema Classics for Solo Piano despite my pounding skull. Cinema Classics for Solo Piano is a stripped down compilation of film music scores from famous composers such as John Williams, James Horner, James Newton Howard, Francis Lai, Henry Mancini, Jerry Goldsmith and more.
I had fun figuring out which tracks came from which films and found I recognized quite a few of them. Northam’s piano interpretation of music from such well-known films as Legends of the Fall, Avatar, Love Story, Chariots of Fire, The Godfather, The Pink Panther, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and more are easily recognizable and quite enjoyable. The interpretations aren’t much different from the original versions except for the missing orchestral instruments.
Featuring twenty-three tracks and over an hour of incredibly enjoyable piano music, Cinema Classics for Solo Piano is perfect for anyone who enjoys a well-performed piano piece. Fans of musical scoring will enjoy this fresh look at some of cinema’s classic film scores.
