Fun With Clichés

Original Poem by Justine Manzano

Somewhere over the rainbow

There’s a light at the end of the tunnel

Over on the other side,

Where the grass is always greener.

There’s hope around the corner

If you simply roll with all the punches

And every door that closes

Always opens another.

All very hopeful phrases—

--The kind you are told in the darkest times,

Times when you need uplifting,

When your faith’s been taxed long ago.

But how helpful are these words,

If you are always waiting for their truth,

Like waiting for water to boil,

Without a fire to heat it?
