David Merrick was a Broadway producer whose shows in the 1960s were highly celebrated.  Original cast recordings of his shows would be produced by record labels like RCA and Columbia.  Popular singers covered songs found in his musicals and made them pop hits.  In 1964, David Merrick asked two well-known artists of the time, John Gary and Ann-Margret, to record cover versions of songs from some of his Broadway hits.  The album was released that October and has become a favorite for both collectors and fans over the years.  On February 14, 2012, Masterworks Broadway released David Merrick Presents Hits from his Broadway Hits in digital format.

The album features twelve tracks of songs from Merrick's musicals, including Fanny, Carnival, Do Re Mi, Gypsy, Oliver!, Take Me Along, Hello, Dolly! and more.  I recognized quite a few of the songs like Make Someone Happy, What Kind of Fool Am I?, Our Language of Love, As Long As He Needs Me and Hello, Dolly! and liked what John Gary and Ann-Margret, supported by The Merrill Station Voices, did with them.  I even enjoyed some of the songs that I didn't recognize.

That being said, I wasn't floored by the album and despite enjoying some of the musicals represented, I probably wouldn't have purchased David Merrick Presents Hits from his Broadway Hits on my own.  However, fans of Merrick's musicals and John Gary and Ann-Margret's singing would probably love the opportunity to download their favorite songs from the album to listen to on their computer, iPod or iPhone
