I have enjoyed comic books since I was a little girl, but I have noticed that, while I read a good deal of Marvel, I gravitate towards DC Comics series. My friends know that I have been a huge fan of some DC Comics heroines like Batgirl, the Birds of Prey, Catwoman (who can also be seen as a villainess) and more. So, it comes as no surprise when one of my friends sent me DC Comics Covergirls, a book collecting all of these DC Comics female icons and more.
The book begins by discussing what a covergirl has been over the years and how DC Comics adapted the covergirl pin-up style for their comic books. The writer discusses how these covergirls evolved over the years from damsels in distress to sexy icons. The book then focuses on various heroines in DC Comics’ history. Focus is given to Wonder Woman, Lois Lane, the major female characters in the Batman series like Batgirl, Batwoman, Catwoman, etc., Supergirl, Vertigo Comics covergirls and those of the new age like the Birds of Prey and more.
Readers are not only provided with beautiful cover art for each of the covergirls discussed, but are also given a synopsis of the characters’ history in comics, their storylines and revisions to their storylines (we all know that comic book reboots are the rage nowadays and storylines have changed quite often), relationships of the covergirls with other male comic book heroes and more. I loved learning the histories of some DC comic book covergirls that I haven’t really followed like Power Girl, Supergirl, Hawkgirl and more.
The book only covers up to 2006 and changes have occurred in the DC comic book universe that is ever evolving, but that doesn’t take anything away from the value of this book. Anyone who loves DC Comics and can appreciate really good cover art will enjoy DC Comics Covergirls, not only for the gorgeous comic art, but for the useful information provided about each covergirl. A great gift that I thoroughly enjoyed reading and will love pouring through for years to come.
