In July 2015, Silva Screen Records released a new album dedicated to the epic theme. Their definition of epic: "pertaining to a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style." In an effort to capture the very best of these epic compositions, they have compiled nineteen tracks of music used in films, video games, trailers and more.
Performed by London Music Works, the music found on the Epic Themes album was created by such accomplished composers as Alan Silvestri, Hans Zimmer, Daft Punk, Evan Holly and more. The music comes from such notable works as The Avengers, Invincible, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Tron: Legacy, King Arthur, Saw, 28 Days Later, Interstellar and more.
What I found remarkable about this album is that the each track seemed to have a relatively similar format. There was a feeling of darkness being faced by a courageous individual(s) unwilling to back down. There was a sense of pride and power emanating from this individual facing down the demons and taking back what they had lost. The music will begin on a dark note, become uplifting and more powerful, rising in crescendo and pace in each and every track on the album.
The fact that the music is so similar should make for a boring album, but the pace of the music and the action feel, coupled with the subtle differences in scoring make for an exciting listen. I rather enjoyed listening to Epic Themes, trying to guess which track came from what movie or video game. It was quite an enjoyable experience best listened to when one needs a pick me up after a long day.
