Movies and music are two heavily entwined genres.  Music serves to enhance the visual in movies, adding drama to one scene, suspense to another…without music, most movies would be rather flat.  Always thought of as integral parts of an entire movie soundtrack, one can rarely find them as stand alones.  The Essential Hollywood, distributed by Sony Classical, is a 2-CD set featuring some of the most memorable themes of cinema.  The set contains 27 songs in all and features music from award-winning composers such as John Williams, Max Steiner, Bernard Herrman, Henry Mancini, and more.

Everyone can think of one movie theme that they have used or referred to on any given occasion.  Psycho: The Murder is a perfect example.  Who hasn’t used that theme for someone who was on the warpath?  What about the theme from Jaws?  Anyone who swims in the ocean has been heckled with that one on more than one occasion.  At one time, the Godfather movie theme was so popular, people programmed the theme to come from their car horns.  Star Wars fans thought the theme of the movie so enjoyable that a disco version was produced for the radio.

The Essential Hollywood is filled with exciting and enjoyable musical themes from movies we grew up with.  The commanding composition of Star Wars, the romantic scores from Casablanca and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the mysteriously suspenseful theme of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, the fantastical Flying Theme from E.T. – The Extraterrestrial, terrifying tracks from Psycho and Jaws, the sweeping composition of the theme from Gone With the Wind…all receive acknowledgement in this fine collection.  Any film aficionado would be thrilled to own this 2-CD set.  At the price of $18 - $20 U.S. dollars, The Essential Hollywood is an immensely entertaining steal!
