The movie Fireflies in the Garden revolves around the Taylor family. On the surface, the Taylors are a successful American family led by Charles (Willem Defoe), a tenured professor on the fast track to become university president. Son Michael (Ryan Reynolds) is a popular romance novelist and daughter Ryne (Shannon Lucio) is about to enter law school. Lisa Taylor (Julia Roberts), the mother, is about to graduate college decades after leaving to attend to her children. A tragic accident soon reveals the familyís history and the reality of the Taylor familyís relationships towards each other and those around them.
The musical score of Fireflies in the Garden was created by British composer Jane Antonia Cornish. By the age of seventeen, Cornish was receiving recognition as a composer, becoming a finalist in the BBC Young Composer of the Year competition. Since then, she has become an award winning composer having created musical scores for such films as Highland Park, Solstice, Island of Lost Souls and more. She has also served as orchestrator for such notable films as Kung Fu Panda, Horton Hears a Who and Hancock.
The musical score of Fireflies in the Garden is classical in nature featuring a piano theme with playful keystrokes which seem to represent the fleeting motion of fireflies. The music is somber in nature and we get the impression that this is not a happy movie, but one fraught with painful open wounds that have yet to mend. There is a great deal of emotional pain wrapped up in this soundtrack.
There is beauty in the sadness of this classical score. Itís somber undertones donít completely dominate the soundtrack in a way that will destroy the mood of the listener. One can tell, through Lisaís theme, that there were once happy moments in this familyís life, but it will take a bit of mending to achieve this happiness again. The Fireflies in the Garden Soundtrack is filled with beautifully composed chamber music and definitely deserves a listen.
