In the dramatic film, Greater Christopher Severio is Brandon Burlsworth, a young man who had always dreamed of playing football for the Arkansas Razorbacks, but was considered too short and fat. Brandon would not take no for an answer, risking everything for a walk on role on the team. Against all odds, Brandon becomes the ultimate success story thanks to his determination and faith in himself and those around him, becoming an All-American and being chosen as an early NFL draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts.
The musical score of Greater was created by British composer Stephen Endelman, whose interest in music came at a young age. By the age of seven, he was playing the clarinet and by the age of twelve, he was a full-time scholar at the Purcell School of Young Musicians. By the age of eighteen, Endelman had composed two operas. Since then, he has worked with such notable music icons as Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Natalie Cole and Renee Fleming. He has composed musical score for such notable films as A Bronx Tale, Home of the Brave, Flirting with Disaster, Kicked in the Head and more.
The Greater Soundtrack features an orchestral musical score that seems to have been organized somewhat out of order. It would seem that all of the dramatically emotional moments of the film are at the beginning of this soundtrack. And so, things start off fairly sad with piano keys expressing some of that pain. But as things move forward, things become brighter as we come across moments of determination that lead to greatness in Brandon Burslworth’s short life. Montage is particularly uplifting, featuring horns, strings, woodwinds and bells reminiscent of music one would expect to here as themes for Olympics or movies about football greats.
The music of Greater expresses both sides of Brandon Burlsworth’s life – the grit and determination that made him a star on the college football field as well as the hardships and struggles he had to face in order to get there. The score is as uplifting as the man’s story and perfectly expresses the ups and downs of this inspiration known by too few. Stephen Endelman created the perfect score for Greater and I highly recommend checking it out.
