In the family action adventure film, The Island of Secrets, the children of a vacationing family find themselves involved in an exciting hunt to capture illegal treasure hunters. Toni, Aleksi and Veeti (who wishes he could be Indiana Jones) team up with expert driver Adriana, to save the artifacts and help send the bad guys to jail during the most exciting summer of their lives.
The musical score of The Island of Secrets was created by Finnish musician and composer Panu Aaltio. Learning the cello at the age of six, Aaltio studied music in Helsinki before moving to Los Angeles in 2005 to attend the Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program at the University of Southern California. Shortly after graduating, Aaltio was tasked with composing additional music for the documentary Nanking. Since then, he has created musical score for The Home of the Dark Butterflies, Sauna, Dawn of the Dragonslayer and Tale of a Lake.
Meant to pay homage to the classic 1980s blockbuster adventure sound created by composers like John Williams and Alan Silvestri, the music of The Island of Secrets starts off with that action adventure feel created through the use of horns and percussion. Since Veeti wants so badly to become Indiana Jones when he grows up, the composer decided to grant him an exciting adventure theme for the score. Though there are some quieter tracks like Toni and Adriana and Hidden Treasure, once the adventure begins, the score moves quickly, adding an island flare to the action and adventure of the story.
The Island of the Secrets Soundtrack does pay homage to those action/adventure films of my youth. In fact, sometimes the music sounds a little too familiar and definitely more youth driven. Discerning adults may not find this score intriguing enough to add to their collection, but kids just growing an affinity for musical score will find this interesting and quite enjoyable.
