What’s the Fourth of July without a little celebration and what better way to celebrate than a fireworks extravaganza! One such event took place at Piscataway Township High School (100 Behmer Road, Piscataway, New Jersey) on July 4, 2005. The event was free and open to all.Prior to the fireworks display, patrons were welcome to take part in an auto show which featured classics from Ford, Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Cadillac. There were numerous concession stands where one could buy all sorts of refreshments from shish kabobs to kettle corn to ice cream. D.J.s from the local radio station, WVPH 90.3FM – The Core (www.thecore.rutgers.edu/), were on hand to supply musical entertainment for those who arrived early. Clowns were on the scene providing children with balloon animals and hats. A dance contest was organized just prior to the main event featuring songs like Jive Bunny’s Dance Mix, Grease Remix, The Electric Slide, and more. If you didn’t already know the dances, you needn’t fret. All you had to do was follow the party staff member who would show you how it was done. Patrons filed into football field bleachers, sat on chairs in the parking lot, filed onto the newly astro-turfed field itself – just about anywhere they could to watch the spectacle. Numerous fire, EMT, and police personnel were on hand should any emergency occur, but the event went off without a hitch and there was fun had by all.
When the display began, whether seated comfortably or standing wherever a spot could be found, spectators were not disappointed. The show began with a Piscataway Township High School 2005 graduate amazing the crowd with her beautiful rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. Then, the sky erupted in a marvelous display of pyrotechnics set to the tunes of such patriotic songs as America the Beautiful, God Bless the USA, Born in the USA, and more. Thirty minutes of multi-colored eruptions big and small wowed the crowd of young and old, who responded with rapturous oohs and ahs and raucous cheers and applause. And when it was over, there wasn’t a single unsatisfied patron to be found.
With so many people on hand for the event, one would expect bottleneck traffic leaving the grounds, but traffic ran rather smoothly with very little rubbernecking.
Overall, a great time had by all which virtually ensures a return performance next Fourth of July!
