Pop / R&B
A MySpace Find

How many of you readers out there remember the pop / R&B group known as DeBarge? This family band produced such ‘80s hits as Rhythm of the Night and Time Will Reveal. Well, this morning I was listening to the radio and I heard that one of the original DeBarge members’ children had decided to follow in her father’s footsteps. An excerpt of one of her songs was played and I was hooked. I rushed home to perform some research on Kristinia Debarge.
As early as three years old, Kristinia DeBarge began to develop her talent as a singer, imitating the stylings and range of singer, songwriter and producer James DeBarge. Listening to James perform hymns and melodies, Kristinia developed her singing talent and soon began searching for her first big break as a performer. That break came in the form of an audition for American Juniors, FOX television’s pee-wee version of American Idol. Making it as far as the Top 20 on the show earned her respect and a great deal of support nationwide.
Kristinia’s MySpace Page offers excerpts of songs that will eventually be compiled into album format. In each song, we can hear the influences of the family DeBarge as well as Aaliyah, Alicia Keys, Beyonce and Janet Jackson. The songs posted thus far offer fans an excellent idea of the depth of Kristinia DeBarge’s vocal range. Of the three songs currently featured on her page, my favorite is Goodbye, which I predict will become the anthem of every woman who has ever kicked a man to the curb. With the hook made famous by the band Steam in their song Nah Nah Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye - “Nah, nah, nah, nah / Nah nah nah nah / Hey hey hey / Goodbye” (I always loved that hook) and the excellent music mix, this song is definitely a catchy tune with a great deal of meaning. It is obvious through the lyrics in this song that breaking up with this person was a freeing experience and rather than being depressed over the failure of the relationship, Kristinia is working to change her life for the better.
I have to thank Elvis Duran and the Morning Zoo for turning me on to Kristinia Debarge’s sound and look forward to more from her in the future. Her talent will certainly land her a record label deal and her sound will be perfect for mainstream radio. I predict we will definitely be hearing more from Kristiana DeBarge in the future.
