            In the final days of high school, young, impetuous and energetic Diana tests her limits, living life to its fullest while her more conservative friend Maureen looks on.  But one day, the innocence of youth is shattered when a gunman holds the two girls captive and forces them to choose which one will die.  Based on the novel by Laura Kasischke, The Life Before Her Eyes revolves around one woman’s survival from a terrifying incident in her youth and how it affects her life today.

            The soundtrack of The Life Before Her Eyes is composed by James Horner.  American composer James Horner began writing musical compositions for film in 1980 and has become a legend in his chosen career, having won two Academy Awards for his work.  He is best known for his composition of the musical scores of such movies as Titanic, Apollo 13, Cocoon, Aliens, Legends of the Fall, Courage Under Fire, Patriot Games, Field of Dreams and more.  He has also received recognition for creating the award winning song Somewhere Out There for the movie An American Tail.

            The soundtrack of The Life Before Her Eyes features some beautiful piano and string compositions with a main theme repeated throughout.  Percussions and variance in the speed and loudness of the music are used to map out significant occurrences in the film.  Track Six, “Choose! Time to decide” represents a pivotal moment in the film and sets the tone for the rest of the soundtrack.  Whereas the music was filled with beauty and lightness prior to the sixth track, each succeeding track contains a darker undertone. 

            The music composed by James Horner for The Life Before Her Eyes Soundtrack is profoundly beautiful despite the sad undertones.  Lovers of classical composition will find The Life Before Her Eyes Soundtrack to be highly enjoyable.  In fact, any music aficionado with an affinity toward piano and/or string compositions is bound to like this soundtrack.  It will make an excellent addition to any music lovers’ soundtrack collection.
