In the third movie in the Men in Black series, history has been rewritten and in the new timeline, Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) has been dead for 40 years. Earth is facing an attack by extraterrestrial forces and, in order to correct past events that will prevent this invasion, Agent J (Will Smith) must travel back in time to the year 1969. While there, he must prevent alien crime boss Boris from assassinating Agent K. With only 24 hours to discover the source of the looming invasion and understand his partner's involvement, Agent J knows only one thing - failure will cause him to be trapped in the past forever.
The musical score of MIB3 was composed by American composer Danny Elfman. Formerly lead singer and songwriter for the band Oingo Boingo, Elfman has become a well-renowned composer in the film and television industry. He was the logical choice for creation of the Men in Black 3 musical score as his score for the original movie earned an Academy Award nomination. He has created some of the most recognized and award-winning compositions in television and in film with the themes of The Simpsons and Desperate Housewives, and the musical scores of such popular films as Batman, Alice in Wonderland, Wanted, Charlotte's Web, Terminator Salvation and more.
For the musical score of Men in Black 3, Danny Elfman employs moments of quiet music shot through with energetic sound. There is a lot of brass and percussion mixed with electronic sounds that are unmistakably alien in nature. Deeper registry horns are employed for an ominous sound, perhaps denoting alien criminal activity.
Despite the fact that the promos of this film made me cringe, I found the MIB3 Soundtrack to be rather enjoyable. And why not? Danny Elfman's composing prowess can make any lame movie sound exciting. I'm not sure if Men in Black 3 is worth the cost of a movie theater ticket, but the Men in Black 3 Soundtrack is definitely exciting and worth taking a listen to.
