I’d been having a rough week and needed a good laugh…or two…or three.  Luckily, a good friend of mine had just recently sent me a couple of laugh-worthy books to read.  I chose Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling.  I had recently seen an episode of The Mindy Project and found I liked her brand of humor.  The book turned out to be just what the doctor ordered.

So, what are the signs of a good comedy book?  The laugh out loud while reading moment.  You know the one - where everyone is looking at you while you have your nose plastered in a book, snickering away at what you're reading.  These are most interesting in public trains and quiet study halls.  The need to re-read sections of the book to others.  You find yourself needing to share the laughable moment in the book with someone...of course, it helps if that someone shares your sense of humor and is not a complete stranger (Note to Self: No strangers).  The need to read the book after a particularly stressful moment (Note to Self: Not in the middle of a meeting, conference call or driving).

What was the point of that last paragraph, other than to remind me not to do things that could get me fired, killed or stared out of the room?  The point is that Mindy Kaling's book - her first book, by the way - exhibited all the signs of a good comedy book.  Her tales about her weight issues, beginning forays into comedy, New York City apartment issues, lack of athletic prowess and experiences in television kept me laughing out loud, wanting to share and feeling the need to go back to the book when the day was none to fun.

Mindy Kaling has that rare talent for comedic timing.  Whether on screen or on paper, Kaling has the ability to get the laugh across with the perfect timing and delivery.  She's a down to Earth comedienne who uses experiences that the average person can relate to and allows us to see the funny in them.  You know, to mock an Oprah saying, the "Ha Ha Moment."

I'm so happy that my friend saw the wisdom in sending me Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling.  It was an incredibly enjoyable read in a week where I could really use a laugh or two or three.  Can't wait for another Kaling book to come out!
