Based on the novels by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games series of films takes place in a dystopian future in which youth from each of the 12 Districts are chosen to take part in a televised death match as punishment for the district uprising against Panem's Capitol 74 years ago. The films starred Jennifer Lawrence in the title role of Katniss Everdeen, a reluctant heroine who eventually leads a final uprising against the wealth of the Capitol and its leader, President Snow (Donald Sutherland).
The musical score of The Hunger Games was created by American composer, conductor, producer and musician James Newton Howard. Coming from a musical family, it was no surprise that James Newton Howard would eventually become involved in a career in the music industry. He began as a musician, touring with such famous singers as Elton John and Crosby, Stills and Nash. His debut into the world of film scoring came in 1985 with Head Office. Since then, James Newton Howard has scored over one hundred films to date, including Pretty Woman, The Devil's Advocate, The Sixth Sense, The Dark Knight, The Bourne Legacy, Nightcrawler and more.
In June 2016, Silva Screen Records released a new album, compiling music from each of The Hunger Games movies. Music from The Hunger Games Saga features fifteen tracks of musical score created for the films by James Newton Howard, performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.
Having seen each and every film in The Hunger Games series, I must admit that the music created by James Newton Howard helped to formulate the drama and danger, enhancing the dramatic and action scenes for the viewer. So, I was happy to receive this compilation, if only to relive certain moments of the film via the music. And relive them I did as I listened to excellent renditions of The Hunger Games theme, Horn of Plenty, Rue's Farewell, Katniss Is Chosen, The Hanging Tree, Primrose and The Hunger Games Suite.
Music from The Hunger Games Saga is an excellent collection of music from the four films and a great way to relive the series. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra does an excellent job in their performance of these tracks, especially the haunting song The Hanging Tree. This is definitely a must have album for fans of The Hunger Games.
