Created by the Wayans Brothers, the Scary Movie franchise is famous for its parodies of recent horror films. Beginning in the year 2000, each Scary Movie has made the attempt to be funnier than the other. The fifth installment of Scary Movie features parodies of Paranormal Activity, Mama, Sinister, The Evil Dead, Black Swan and more and stars such notable celebrities as Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Snoop Dogg, Katt Williams, Molly Shannon, Terry Crews, Simon Rex, Jerry O’Connell, Sarah Hyland, Katrina Bowden, Tyler Posey, Shad Moss (AKA: Bow Wow), Kate Walsh, Heather Locklear, Mac Miller and Mike Tyson.
The musical score of Scary Movie V was composed by American composer James L. Venable. No stranger to creating musical scores for comedy, Venable has teamed up often with Kevin Smith and has composed the musical scores of Jay and Bob Strike Back, Clerks II, Jersey Girl and more. Having composed the musical score for Scary Movie 3 and 4, Venable was the perfect choice to create the musical score for the fifth installment of the franchise.
According to Venable, "This score was my third opportunity to take a forensic look at the music from many of my favorite Scary Movies. I had a lot of fun trying to figure out a way to compose original music that supported the comedy and action of the Scary Movie V while maintaining the music essence of the film that was being featured in the comedy." And Venable succeeded perfectly. I've long been complaining as to the ways that composers are approaching creating musical scores for horror films. I've found that these scores are more sound effects than actual music and that bothers me. How can I review a musical score that contains little or no music?
But Venable has taken a different approach with Scary Movie V. Knowing that the film is a parody of recent horror films, Venable creates an orchestral score featuring blaring horns, screeching violins and choral chanting to add the fear factor. He used fast paced strings and percussion to add that action feel. This was real music, not a bunch of electronic sounds disguised as music like the many horror film scores I've reviewed lately.
The Scary Movie V Score is the perfect musical score for a horror film with action overtones and a welcome change from the horror-based soundtracks that I have listened to lately. Listening to this score plus the Scary Movie V Soundtrack would give you that perfect mix of horror, action and comedy.
