The Illustrated Stephen King Trivia Book
After trying my hand at The Illustrated Stephen King Movie Trivia Book, I couldn’t wait to test my knowledge with The Illustrated Stephen King Trivia Book. After all, I have read more Stephen King movies than I have watched movies based on his novels. I figured I would do much better with the trivia questions in this book.
The trivia questions in this book are divided into several categories, the first chapter containing questions about the author himself, followed by questions about his novels, novellas, short stories, works written under his pseudonym, the Dark Tower series, movies and other adaptations, non-fiction, essays and the like and more. This time around, the answers are at the back of the book, making it harder for the less scrupulous to cheat. But, if you do feel the need for help, there is a chapter full of hints that might help you in answering the trivia questions.
As I began my journey, I realized that I knew a lot more about Stephen King than I had expected to. I must have learned a few things about his life over the years through magazines and television shows. As a rule, although I do have my favorite authors, I really don’t do much research on their lives. I find it interesting to learn what drives an author to write about certain subjects and often times that means learning a bit about the author’s history, but I generally don’t know much about the personal lives of my favorite authors. And yet, I got more questions right in this section than in many of the other sections of this book.
I found the rest of the book to be as frustrating as the last. Whereas I thought I would do best with the trivia about King’s novels, I found that I scored highest in the section about movies and other adaptations from his works. Seriously! When I did so poorly on the questions in The Illustrated Stephen King Movie Trivia Book?! Argh! There were sections I ended up skipping altogether like The Dark Tower section (I haven’t read any of the books in that series) and the essays, etc. section as I never really focused on Stephen King’s nonfiction works.
I suppose that The Illustrated Stephen King Trivia Book would be a great deal of fun for someone whose life revolves around all that Stephen King creates, but for me, who enjoys other written works and am not obsessed with the man, this book became a source of frustration and, eventually, boredom. I might have done a bit better if I used the Hints section, but I wanted to try to answer the questions without help…shouldn’t I be able to answer them without help? Guess not. Sigh.
Through all of my complaints, I must admit that I enjoyed trying to decipher all of the clues in the illustrations by Glenn Chadbourne. I found those illustrations, scattered throughout the book, to be the most interesting and fun bits of the book as a whole.
Should you want to gift a dedicated Stephen King with The Illustrated Stephen King Trivia Book, be certain that this fan is incredibly dedicated indeed. Otherwise he or she will be incredibly frustrated by the second or third chapter of questions.
