In the movie Stuck in Love, Greg Kinnear is Bill Borgens, a divorced novelist who can't seem to stop obsessing over and spying on his ex-wife of three years (Jennifer Connelly).  His neighbor-with-benefits, Tricia (Kristen Bell), tries to get him back in the dating game with little success.  Meanwhile, his daughter, Samantha (Lily Collins) is publishing her first novel while rapidly retreating the idea of love.  His son, Rusty (Nat Wolff), is just setting out as a fantasy writer and finding unexpected love with a dream girl with very real problems.

The Stuck in Love Soundtrack features musical score created by Mike Mogis and Nathaniel Walcott and songs by various artists like Connor Oberst, Nat & Alex Wolff, Bright Eyes and more.  Mike Mogis and Nathaniel Walcott are prominent members in the hand Bright Eyes, which just happens to be the favorite band of Stuck in Love's writer/director Josh Boone.  According to Boone, "My pipe dream was to have Bright Eyes, my favorite band score the film."

Mogis and Walcott go back all the way to the mid-1990s when Mike Mogis invited then high school junior now composer, arranger, keyboardist and trumpet player Nathaniel Walcott to his home to play trumpet for a track on an early Lullaby for the Working Class album.  The two have worked with a number of artists over the years both in and outside Bright Eyes.

As Josh Boone states, music was a big part of Stuck in Love: "Music is one of the most powerful tools a filmmaker can use to evoke emotion."  To that end, artists Mogis and Walcott created a musical score that represents both the lighter and darker moments of love.  Meanwhile, various songs, interspersed between the tracks of score, also help to express the emotions of a number of moments in the film.

As I listened to this soundtrack, there were a number of songs about love that I enjoyed.  At Your Door by Nathaniel Walcott and Mike Mogis featuring Big Harp is a beautiful love song.  You Are Your Mother's Child by Connor Oberst is a song about growing up and realizing that you may not always have your parents around to make things better, but you don't have to go it alone I Won't Love You Any Less by Nat & Alex Wolff is about the kind of love that stands the test of time.  But perhaps the most poignant song on the Stuck in Love Soundtrack is The Calendar Hung Itself... by Bright Eyes.  This song tells the whole story of Stuck in Love in miniature.

Now, if you are not much into love songs, Stuck in Love may seem a bit sappy to you and the musical score isn't really anything special.  But if you enjoy a good love song by an independent artist, you should check out the Stuck in Love Soundtrack.  It will be well worth the listen.
