I like Boba Fett. I don’t know what it is about him. Is it the brooding bad guy under a helmet quality? Or the fact that there is a heart buried underneath all of that armor? I think my interest in Boba Fett grew after reading the books written by Karen Traviss
in the Star Wars: Legacy of the Force
novels. Thanks to Traviss, I learned so much about the previously mysterious character, but I wanted to learn more. There were allusions to past events in this novel series - events that shaped the life of Boba Fett at an early age. Thus, I turned to the Star Wars children’s book series from Scholastic Inc. The first novel - Star Wars: Boba Fett: The Fight to Survive.
The book begins shortly before the events of Attack of the Clones and expands upon what we see of Boba Fett in the film. We learn just how close Boba Fett was to his father, Jango, and how devastating his death was. Jango was Boba’s hero and mentor and, in his eyes, the Jedi
took his father away from him making the Jedi Boba’s enemies for life. These are things we already knew, thanks to Attack of the Clones, but Terry Bisson
gives us more, as we learn just what happens to Boba after Jango’s death.
Fortunately for Boba Fett, Jango knew that a bounty hunter’s
life was ordinarily a short one and he left something behind for him; something that will help guide him through the difficult times to come and make Boba one of the most powerful and talented bounty hunters in the galaxy. Unfortunately, not everyone wants Boba to succeed in this endeavor. It is rumored that the Jedi are looking for Boba Fett, searching for answers about who hired his father and what his mission truly was. The Jedi aren’t the only ones looking. Apparently Count Dooku
has placed a bounty on him. He wants Boba brought to him alive, but to what end?
Despite the fact that this book is essentially a kid’s novel, I really enjoyed this tale. It gives you incredible insight into the boy that would eventually become a hardened bounty hunter whose name would cause many to quake in fear. A short and quick read, Star Wars: Boba Fett: The Fight to Survive should be rated as a must read for any Boba Fett fan as it expands upon his backstory, something we knew very little about before Attack of the Clones. Now that I have enjoyed learning so much about the origins of Boba Fett, I can’t wait to read the second book in the series, Crossfire.
