I had always enjoyed the original fiction short stories in the Star Wars Insider Magazine, so I was elated to discover they would be bringing that section of the magazine back in 2011. The first story I read, Star Wars: The Old Republic: Third Lesson, wasn’t bad and I couldn’t wait to see what the next issue had to offer, but I was surprised to open the May/June 2011 issue to find a Fate of the Jedi
tale featuring Vestara Khai.
Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: First Blood takes place between the novels Omen and Abyss in the Fate of the Jedi series. First Blood fills in the gaps and explains how the Lost Tribe of the Sith
began building their new Sith
fleet. This tale brings us their very first foray into ship hijacking, a journey during which Vestara Khai experiences the ultimate test - killing an unarmed sentient being who is not Sith and therefore unworthy of life.
It is in this short story that we learn why Vestara wavers between the dark and light sides of the Force. While she tries to accept her role in the Sith universe, she can’t help but wonder if it truly is the correct path.
In First Blood, Christie Golden
brings us even closer to understanding the psyche of the Sith apprentice known as Vestara Khai and the warrior she will become.
