Star Wars
fans thirst for stories about characters from the original film. I love them as well, but often worry about continuity issues. This issue of Star Wars Insider Magazine boasts an exclusive short story by David J. Williams
and Mark S. Williams
featuring Han Solo
and Chewbacca.
In Star Wars: Maze Run, Han Solo and Chewbacca are tapped to smuggle cargo to a mysterious group of spacers. The catch? Han and Chewie have to maneuver the Millennium Falcon
through the Rishi Maze, a treacherous flight path featuring a huge black hole, surrounded by debris. So, of course, Han readily accepts the challenge, especially when the half of the money for the trip is paid up front. Han and Chewie rush off to complete their task for the rest of the money. But first, Han has to manage his way past an Imperial Blockade
in Hutt Space. Then’ there’s that pesky, fully operational Sith
relic. Oh, and did we mention that the cargo has been booby-trapped?
The authors of this short story seem to have their characters down, perfectly capturing the friendship of Han and Chewie and Han’s smart-alecky nature. I loved learning a bit more about the Millennium Falcon’s specs, like the engineering station with its holo-navigation station and the manual latches on the cargo hold that can only be opened from the exterior of the ship. Of course, taking place before Star Wars: A New Hope, we know that Han and Chewie will get out of this predicament, but it’s fun to read about their exploits and near-misses.
I enjoyed Maze Run and found it to be a perfect addition to the Star Wars saga. Not only does it reveal a bit more about Han’s adventures prior to A New Hope, but it does so without destroying the continuity of the Star Wars tales before it. Star Wars Insider Magazine is on a roll, presenting us with quite a few new and interesting exclusive short stories. I can’t wait to see what’s next on the agenda.
