As a preview to Joe Schreiberís latest Star Wars novel, Darth Maul: Lockdown, Star Wars Insider Magazine has published a short story by Schreiber set in the same locale.  The setting of Star Wars: The Syrox Redemption is Cog Hive Seven, a prison planet with a sadistic warden and prisoners who definitely deserve to be there.

The Syrox Redemption is a prequel of sorts told by Zero, an inmate who has earned a reputation for being able to obtain anything another inmate might need.  He has been known to obtain drugs, food, weapons, even shimmersilk slippers, so it comes as no surprise that he is approached by fellow inmate Nagma asking him to procure Anzati snot garlic for him.  The surprise comes when he learns why Nagma has been looking so sickly lately and what he wants to use the Anzati snot garlic for.

The tale gives readers a special look at what life is like in Cog Hive Seven, from the sadistic guards to the ultra-dangerous inmates to the special way in which inmates are tagged to prevent escape or rioting.  And letís not forget the special ways in which inmates are pitted against each other in gladiatorial battle for the amusement of the warden or the terror hiding behind the walls.

This look at the prison planet is bound to make readers wonder how Darth Maul ends up on Cog Hive Seven and just how he will ever be able to get away.  I hadnít been interested in reading Darth Maul: Lockdown, but after reading Star Wars: The Syrox Redemption, I definitely plan on getting my hands on this book.  Oh, and by the way, Mr. Schreiber, love the nod toward the Shawshank Redemption Ė awesome touch to a really enjoyable short story.
