These Amazing Shadows is a documentary about The National Film Registry, a roll call of some of the most culturally, historically or aesthetically significant American films of all time.  The list, now 550 in number, feature films in every genre, from documentary to silent film, Hollywood classics and more.  The documentary, featuring interviews with such well-known actors, directors and producers as Rob Reiner, John Singleton, Gale Anne Heard, Tim Roth, Debbie Reynolds and a host of others, offers us a detailed look at just how these films tell the story of our lives.

The musical score of These Amazing Shadows was created by American composer Peter Golub.  Growing up in a musical family in New York, Golubís interest in music was cultivated right away.  At the age of six, he was learning piano.  While in high school, in addition to his musical interests, Golub developed a taste for the theater.  Years later, his interests in both music and theater would meld as Golub became a dramatic composer, creating musical scores for both theater and film.  Recent works include Countdown to Zero, Frozen River, The Laramie Project, Time Stands Still, Come Back, Little Sheba and more.

When I first listened to this musical score, it was early morning.  As I sat drinking my coffee and looking at the world waking up outside my window, I realized how the music I was listening to made the perfect soundtrack for the dawning of a new day.  There is a sense of wonderment and newness brought about by the orchestral music featuring woodwinds, piano and strings.  The piano compositions were especially striking.  As the soundtrack played on, I began to recognize some familiar sounds in smatterings of score sampled from such significant films as To Kill a Mockingbird, The Wizard of Oz, 2001: A Space Odyssey, West Side Story and more.

The soundtrack for These Amazing Shadows is incredibly soothing.  Having not seen the documentary, it is hard to say whether the music fits in with the visuals of the film, but as a standalone album, the musical score created by Peter Golub is quite enjoyable.  I found it to be a perfect way to start off my hectic day - a moment of beauty and wonderment before the chaos of my life took over.  These Amazing Shadows is the perfect soundtrack for someone looking to start their day off nicely or to wind down with at the end of a rough day.
