Based on the hit 1970s British televisions series, The Sweeney follows Detective Inspector Jack Regan (Ray Winstone) and his partner George Carter (Ben Drew) as old school crime fighters in a modern setting. With an old enemy making an appearance at a recent London crime scene involving a bank heist, the duo will do whatever it takes to hunt down the criminals, including defying their boss (Damian Lewis).
The musical score of The Sweeney was created by Scottish composer Lorne Balfe. Beginning his career as a composer in Hollywood, Balfe provided additional music for a number of motion picture soundtracks including Pirates of the Caribbean II and III, Angels & Demons, Iron Man and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. He also composed and produced the score for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed: Revelations video games, co-composed the soundtrack of Megamind with Hans Zimmer, and produced the soundtracks for Sherlock Holmes and Inception.
The Sweeney Soundtrack features music designed to get the juices flowing. These law enforcement agents are not your run of the mill coppers. They are intense, exciting and willing to do anything to get the job done. Thus, the soundtrack of this film all but begged for adrenaline pumping action-based themes. Fast-paced strings and other orchestral instruments are supplemented by electronic music and sounds.
Tracks 1 thru 13 feature the exciting musical score of Lorne Balfe, but tracks 14 thru 18 feature high intensity songs and remixes. I really enjoyed the remixes of the Sweeney Theme by Doctor P and Barry Adamson, but my favorites on this end of the soundtrack are the songs Getting Nowhere by Magnetic Man featuring John Legend, and Crossover by Magnetic Man featuring Katy B. Both tracks feature lyrics that seemed to fit the plight of the characters in the film and were great stand alone tracks as well.
All-in-all, The Sweeney Soundtrack is a fun musical experience, whether experienced along with the film or as a standalone album, featuring adrenaline-pumping music that any fan will enjoy. Featuring orchestral and techno styles throughout, The Sweeney Soundtrack is a unique musical score that begs taking a listen to.
