Underworld: Awakening is the fourth installment in the Underworld movie series.  This film takes place a few months after the ending of Underworld: Evolution.  Humans have learned of the existence of vampires and lycans and have vowed to eradicate their world from such creatures.  Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a vampire formerly known as a Death Dealer who hunted down lycans, has been kidnapped by humans during this mass extermination and placed in cryogenic suspension.  She awakens in Antigen, a facility alleged to have been created in order to find a vaccine against the virus that causes vampires and lycan.  While escaping, visions of a lycan-vampire hybrid that was once her lover lead her to Eve (India Eisley), her daughter.  Selene soon discovers the reality behind Antigen and enlists the aid of a police detective to help her take down Antigen before they destroy her people.

The Underworld movie series is known for its slamming soundtracks and musical scores.  Underworld Awakening is no exception, featuring music by Evanescence, Linkin Park, The Cure, Black Light Burns, Collide and more and a musical score by Paul Haslinger.  Classically trained in Salzburg and Vienna, Haslinger expanded his musical knowledge by studying electronica as well. He joined the pioneering group Tangerine Dream, releasing four albums and collaborated on numerous film projects over five years. After leaving Tangerine Dream, Haslinger became a programmer for composer Graeme Revell, working on films like Blow, The Negotiator, Tomb Raiderand more. In 2000, Haslinger composed the musical score for Cheaters. Since then, he has worked on scores for Crazy/Beautiful, Blue Crush, Into the Blue, The Italian Job, Crank and every Underworld film in the series.

The interesting thing about the music of Underworld: Awakening is that the songs in the film seem to perfectly compliment the musical score created by Haslinger.  Itís possible that this is due to the remixing of these goth, rock and alternative songs by Danny Lohner, otherwise known as RenholdŽr.  Whoever chose the music for this album was spot on, selecting songs that represented Selene and the issues she faces in this film.  Every single song on this album held a special meaning to the characters and the events taking place in the film and I thoroughly enjoyed every single track.  Iíve seen heavy metal and rock tracks remixed successfully like this before in movie soundtracks like Mortal Kombat and Tron: Legacy.  These new versions of the original songs seem to add an extra edge to their already poignant messages.

The music by Paul Halsinger is adrenaline-pumping to say the least, most especially when you start reaching the latter tracks.  The music rises in intensity as the events in the movie become more involved.  There is no denying that Halsinger is in his element here, creating a soundtrack that combines orchestral music with electronica to create a ďhybridĒ score that perfectly captures the spirit of the film.

It isnít often that I think there should be two separate albums for one particular movieís music.  Underworld: Awakening is the exception to my rule.  The Underworld: Awakening Soundtrack contains over an hourís worth of incredible song mixes and the Underworld: Awakening Score features over an hourís worth of high-intensity musical scoring.  Put together, thatís two hours worth of incredible music that you donít want to miss!
