In the psychological thriller Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day, David and Kari Ames (Blair Underwood and Sharon Leal) are a couple who seem to have it all - a happy, comfortable home and a loving family. But the kidnapping of their six year old daughter from their home destroys that happiness. Over the course of seven days the couple will discover the numerous secrets they have been keeping form each other, secrets that can destroy their marriage and tear them lives apart.
The musical score of Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day was created by South African composer Mark Kilian. While in South Africa, Mark Kilian earned a Master's Degree in composition and became a very active musical performer as a pianist. Upon arriving in the United States in 1994, he enrolled in USC's Film Scoring program. Once he had completed the program, Kilian worked as an assistant to composer Christopher Young and then went on to join Machine Head, composing music for use in commercial for such lucrative companies as Budweiser, Apple, American Express and Toyota. He scored his first feature film, Lovergirl, in 1997. Since then, he has composed musical scores for Traitor, Rendition, Before the Rains, Legacy, Totsi, La Mission, The Least Among You, Body of Proof, Daybreak, Jake in Progress and The Matrix: Path of Neo.
The entire musical score of Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day is a dichotomy of styles and sound. The score features orchestral music mixed with electronic sound and ominous sounding tracks mixed with beautiful and seemingly joyous orchestral pieces. The varying styles and sounds on this album made me wonder just what the movie was about. Having seen the trailer for the film, I now understand the contradictory phases of this album. According to Kilian, "I wrote a hybrid score using orchestra, percussion and a lot of electronically manipulated elements to encompass at the same time the feeling of love and togetherness that David and Kari have for each other and the way it all degenerates in a spiral that neither of them can control. Using a lot of backwards sounds and melodies that bend downwards helped in adding to the sense of disorientation and hopelessness as the story progresses."
Mark Kilian is known for his exotic sounds and he somehow sneaks some of that into this musical score, adding percussion and other interesting exotic instruments into the orchestral mix. One of my favorite tracks is a sultry blues composition entitled Kari Meets Will. The track is way too short, but the music is so enticing that I must commend Kilian on his foray into the blues genre. Of course, Kari Meets Will is only one of 28 tracks of amazing music composed by one of the most interesting and innovative composers of this century. I have always said you can never go wrong with a Mark Kilian musical score and Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day is just further proof of that statement.
