As a kid, I watched the Wonder Woman pilot movie featuring Cathy Lee Crosby as the Amazon Princess and then the television series starring Linda Carter as Wonder Woman.  I watched her perform superhero feats on the Justice League cartoons every weekend.  I even purchased comic books featuring Wonder Woman.  I knew that she was supposed to be an Amazon Princess and that she owed her very existence to the Greek Gods.  I knew she had special bullet-deflecting bracelets, a tiara that could be used as a boomerang of sorts, an invisible jet and a Lasso of Truth.  I knew her mother was Queen of the Amazon women.  But that was pretty much it.  How did she get chosen to be Wonder Woman?  Where did her powers come from?  How did her gear work?  What was the story behind this Amazon Warrior Princess?

I found the answers to all of these questions and more Wonder Woman: The Ultimate Guide to the Amazon Princess by Scott Beatty (2003 edition).  Much like the X-Men Ultimate Guide, this guide seeks to explain everything about Wonder Woman.  To that end, Scott Beatty supplies us with over 140 pages of information about her, her origins, her family, friends, assorted weaponry, various costumes, homelands, enemies and more.  Every page is chock full of illustrations that serve as a visual aide to all of the information supplied.

Wonder Woman has undergone many incarnations and her history has been altered over the years as is often the case with comic book heroes.  Thus, we are supplied with a 19-page comic book timeline that explains all of the adventures and changes made since the character’s first appearance in 1941 in DC Comics All-Star Comics, Issue #8.  Scattered throughout the timeline are pictures of various covers Wonder Woman has graced over these 60-plus years.

Information supplied by Scott Beatty has given me new insight into Wonder Woman.  Prior to reading this book I had many unanswered questions about this comic book hero.  Now, I feel as if I have read the Wonder Woman series of comic books from inception to present.  I now know her motives, her powers, her family and friends.  I know about her enemies and what motivates them to battle against her.  If there was any piece of information I couldn’t visualize, all I had to do was look at the hundreds of detailed pictures in the book and my questions would be answered.

Wonder Woman: The Ultimate Guide to the Amazon Princess is a perfect addition to any Wonder Woman collector’s shelf.  Fans who want to know more about their favorite superhero will find this book extremely useful.  With talks about a Wonder Woman movie in the future, now would be a perfect time to check out this book and brush up on your Wonder Woman knowledge before heading off to the cinema.  Wonder Woman: The Ultimate Guide to the Amazon Princess provides the most comprehensive look at the Amazon Princess I have ever seen to date.
